Lessons well learned

Lessons well learned

It’s been said—and we agree—that every experience teaches you something. And when you’re an agency with top-tier talent and decades of experience, you’ve collectively learned a lot.

We’ve been swapping stories about the lessons we’ve learned from previous life experiences, and how those lessons influence what we do now. Here’s what we’ve discovered:

From BMW:  Even the smallest details matter, so do not sacrifice quality for speed. Adhering to these values leads to a superior product, customer experience, and brand loyalty.

— Dylan Young, Firewood Senior Events Architect

From eBay:   Keep it human: When you hire top level talent, managing mostly becomes about clearly aligning and communicating around common goals, then getting out of the way to let people do their jobs. When inevitable friction to the process gets introduced, use the golden rule with colleagues and customers: treat them with courtesy and respect and don’t take things personally. More often than not, your colleagues and customers are talented humans just trying to do a good job. Listen carefully and practice empathy to understand where they are coming from.

— Delyn Simons, Firewood Platform Strategist

From Intel:  Make and meet commitments, plus assume responsibility while constructively confronting and solving problems. This is a classic hardware chip manufacturing culture and where Silicon Valley got its name. As embodied by the great Andy Grove, relentless attention to detail down to the last nanometer at chip fabrication plants is the how behind Intel culture and the Intel Inside brand.

— Also from Delyn Simons

From General Mills:  Soft skills are incredibly important. Always being professional, courteous, and harmonious will create long lasting and meaningful relationships with your colleagues, and, in turn, create long lasting and meaningful results for your company.

— Kevin Gu, Firewood Retail Marketing Manager

From Intuit:  Challenge the status quo. Test, test, test, and always start out with a hypothesis. Practice “inquiry” (asking questions) versus “advocacy” (stating one’s views) to make business progress and maintain good interpersonal relationships.

— Giovanna O’Grady, Firewood Senior Marketing Strategist

From Fortune Management:  Emails get forwarded or accidentally sent to the ‘wrong’ people. Always communicate as if you were standing with a microphone in the middle of a giant room with everyone you know watching / listening. Would you want you grandmother to read that email? No? Then don’t say it / write it like that.

— Sue Separk, Firewood Senior Accountant

From IBM:  Be open and interactive with employees. Ambiguities and lack of communication can hurt morale.

— John Leung, Firewood Digital Marketing Manager

From Intuit:  The business solution that is beneficial to ALL stakeholders:  customers, employees and stockholders is the right solution.

— Lori Von Rueden, Firewood VP of eCommerce

From Compaq (acquired by HP):  Creative should start and end with the brief. The output is only as good as the input.

— Lisa Bellamy, Firewood Creative Strategist

From Coldwater Creek:  Companies need to evolve and change with the needs of their customers. If they do not, they will fail.

— Loni Knepper, Firewood CFO

In short, experience is quite a good teacher.
