Madison’s motivation

Headshot-MadisonThere once was a college graduate—let’s call her Madison—who was in need of a first job. Not any job, but a career starter job. She, however, did not want to work where it was comfortable—at home, in Minneapolis. Her goals were set two thousand miles away in an ultra competitive part of the country where she knew no one. That would be the Bay Area. Right here.

What did Madison do? In a nutshell: she networked her butt off, researched the area, the companies , established connections, sent personal letters, etc. etc. etc.

Where did Firewood come in? We had an open associate position for our events team. We asked our contacts if they knew anyone. Yes, we did that before posting on Linkedin. “I know this great eager junior person,” a friend of our Firewood family said. He could have been talking about a niece, a neighbor’s daughter, his little sister. He meant Madison, whom a few weeks before he didn’t know from Adam, but now wholeheartedly endorsed after her super effective long distance reach.

Brianna’s big move

Headshot-BrianaThere was later a young professional in North Carolina—let’s call her Briana. She was also determined to move to our neck of the woods. She found a Firewood job opening that she liked and immediately dug into our social media. She found Madison’s post. She wrote to Madison: “love your story, got any pointers for me?” she asked, or something like that. We loved Briana and also hired her.

What do these stories have in common?

  1. Confidence – Madison and Briana knocked on doors. Eventually, some opened.
  2. A good fit for the job – An open door is only the beginning, a nice battle won. Once you cross the threshold, you have to be ready to show credentials (a resume that matches the open position).
  3. Affinity for the company – Both had felt at home with Firewood before meeting any Firewoodians.

Madison and Briana were more than a “cute meet”—a Hollywood term that implies exactly what it says. They could also perform. As you set out in your own networking adventure, make sure to target the companies and the people you’d like to grow with.
